What is a Mala Bead?
Posted by Rana Nader on
Mala Beads, or more specifically Japa Mala Beads, are a functional garlands of meaningful and mindful beads used for meditation. They are often kept sacred and close by and either carried in a special pouch or worn as jewelry, typically as a necklace or a wrap bracelet.
Japa is a Sanskrit term for the repetition of a mantra or intention and Mala is Sanskrit for garland. When used in meditation the fingers will usually move across each bead with an inhale along with a mantra repeated either aloud or mentally and exhale on the knot helping to achieve the intention of that meditation session.
The gift of an elegant Mala is that you can wear it wherever you go. To work, out with friends, through hard times and easy. The Mala you wear or carry is a reminder that your intentions are always within reach. You will likely find your new Mala helps your meditation practice expand well beyond the mat.
A Mala is usually made with 108 beads, but smaller versions can also be made with 54, 36, 27, 18, 12 or even just 9 beads. Beads themselves can be Crystals, Wood or even Seeds. Each type of bead has different properties and a Mala will have the most power to help manifest your goals when those properties align with your intentions. A Mala should be chosen carefully for not only its appearance, but its meaning. Many times a completely unique and custom designed Mala is the easiest way to ensure your Mala will be working most powerfully for you.
Every one of my Malas is a piece of art, carefully and lovingly knotted by hand. A dedicated knot is tied in between each bead. This makes your Mala extremely strong and also is reminder for you to exhale after each mantra. Each Mala has a single and unique guru bead and usually a carefully selected tassel or the dangling threads that both completes and centers the design and power of the Mala.
